Why?

For many of us, stress is part of what we go through the course of our mission or service. It is in fact an aspect of the work that we could be attracted to as it challenges us to perform difficult tasks in challenging circumstances. This means that to a certain extent, we may perceive stress as positive and motivating. It prompts us to take action and to shift our thinking patterns to new perspectives and possibilities.

However, in the long run stress can take its toll, and our capacity to deal with it and adversity can slowly erode. It can have a detrimental impact on our physical health as well as our professional and personal lives. In some cases, stress can lead to burnout. Because of this, it is evident that learning how to deal with stress is an essential part of providing efficient and effective service for the Kingdom of God.

Serving and caring for others without caring for yourself is an impossible task.

We believe that caring for one self includes actively building and maintaining your capacity to deal with stress and adversity, also known as your ’personal resilience’. Evidence shows that there are identifiable factors which boost resilience that can be developed through time and training.

How?

InterHealth offers a one-day training course that will look into a variety of approaches to stress in order to increase resilience and prevent burnout during your service.

In the morning we will be looking at stress, its symptoms, and some practical tools to reduce stress. We will also discuss ways of reducing stress both for yourself and for those around you. In the afternoon, we look into resilience and explore the factors that positively contribute to a person’s resilience.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the nature of stress;
  • Identify how to recognise stress and burnout symptoms;
  • Develop strategies to effectively manage and reduce stress;
  • Understand what is meant by personal resilience;
  • Have an overview of the five categories of personal resilience and be able to use them to review resilience factors and support needs;
  • Develop and strengthen your personal resilience.

InterHealth uses a variety of learning methods suitable for adults to cater for different learning styles. This training uses:

  • PowerPoint
  • Brainstorming
  • Group discussion and feedback
  • Drawing
  • Brief games
  • Scenario-based work
  • Working on personal output to take away

To take away

At the end of the training each participant will take away:

  1. An InterHealth workbook on ‘Stress & Personal Resilience’ as well as any other relevant resources to remind participants of their learning and extend their thinking.
  2. A Personal Resilience Review including identified action points to strengthen personal resilience.
